Every Jar Has a Story
Long before Nan Yang existed, my family's story began in Melaka, Malaysia.
In the 1950s, my grandparents ran a small kopitiam near Bukit Cina. It wasn't just a place to eat, it was where the community gathered over coffee/tea, conversation, and familiar flavors. My father was even born above the shop.
Looking back, I realize food was never just about the meal. It was how people connected.
THE HEART OF ACAR
Every year, my secondary school held a carnival fundraiser. My mum and a group of incredible mothers spent days preparing Acar together in our home. Local farmers donated vegetables, and our kitchen overflowed with cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, and laughter.
By the end of the day, the whole house smelled like turmeric, vinegar, garlic, and shallots.
CARRYING IT FORWARD
Years later, after moving to Los Angeles, I realized something. Malaysian food deserved to be discovered the way I had always known it, not as a niche cuisine, but as something vibrant, versatile, and worthy of a place in every kitchen.
That's why I started Nan Yang. Nan Yang exists to preserve and share authentic Malaysian flavors by making them accessible, versatile, and part of everyday meals.
We aren't recreating nostalgia. We're inviting more people to experience the flavors that shaped us.
WHY THE NAME NAN YANG?
"Nan Yang" (南洋) means Southern Seas, a historical Chinese term used to describe the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia.
For generations, it has represented a region where cultures, traditions, and flavors came together through trade and migration. That spirit is at the heart of our brand.
Malaysian food itself is a reflection of those influences. Malay, Chinese, Indian, and many others, coming together into something uniquely Malaysian.
Nan Yang celebrates that richness while bringing it into today's pantry.
Whether you're discovering Malaysian food for the first time or reconnecting with flavors from home,
Welcome to Nan Yang.
